Nokia's Lumia 1020 features 41 megapixel camera

 

Nokia has unveiled a new handset with a 41 megapixel sensor which it claims can record "details never thought possible from a smartphone".

It says consumers will be able to zoom in and reframe their photos without worrying about the image quality suffering.
Analysts who have tested the device said that it was "without doubt" the best smartphone camera on the market.
But they added that was not a guarantee that it would be a bestseller.
Market research firm IDC recently carried out a survey of smartphone owners in 25 countries to identify what factors were most likely to drive future purchases.
The results placed camera resolution 15th on a list of 23 features. Audio quality for voice, battery life, device security and browsing came top of the poll.

Nigeria's Lagos city building collapse kills 'seven'

At least seven people have been killed after a residential building collapsed in a poor neighbourhood in Nigeria's main city, Lagos, officials have said.

A baby was among at least seven other people rescued from the three-story building in the Ebute-Meta neighbourhood.
The building caved in because of structural defects, officials added.
Lagos is one of the most overcrowded cities in Africa, with many badly built structures and poor safety standards.
Nigerian Red Cross official Oladimeji Ige said rescue operations were continuing as they suspected that more people were trapped under the building, AP news agency reports.

China and Nigeria sign $1.1bn deal

China has agreed to give Nigeria a $1.1bn (£700m) low-interest loan to build much-needed infrastructure.

The deal was struck during Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday.
The money would help build roads, airport terminals in four cities, and a light-rail line for Nigeria's capital.

Housemaid jailed 28 years for stealing N35m jewellery

A housemaid, Mary John, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for stealing her mistress’ jewellery estimated at N35m.
The 30-year-old woman slumped moments after hearing the sentence, hitting her head against the carpeted surface of the court room.
The impact shook the walls of the court room, but she was quickly resuscitated and carried out by prison warders.

Mariah Carey was taken to a New York hospital last night after dislocating her shoulder on the set of a video shoot, the singer's rep confirms to E! News.
"Mariah injured herself while filming a video for the remix of '#Beautiful,' directed by her husband Nick Cannon," the rep says. "She was taken to hospital late last night, where doctors reset her shoulder. She is fine and is recovering at home."

How much are old home computers worth?

A computer from 1976 that originally retailed for $666.66 is to be auctioned and could fetch up to $500,000.
The Apple-I computer was one of the first 25 computer elements designed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in their famous California garage.
About 200 were made but most have disappeared or been discarded, with only around 30 to 50 still believed to be in existence.
The model that is going under the hammer had been stored away in a cardboard box collecting dust by a retired school psychologist.

Nigeria's Tope Folarin wins Caine writing prize

 He received the £10,000 ($15,000) prize for his short story Miracle, set in an evangelical Nigerian church in the US state of Texas.
The judges described it as a "delightful and beautifully paced narrative".
Mr Folarin was among five writers short-listed for the prize, regarded as Africa's leading literary award.
Three other Nigerians were short-listed - Elnathan John for Bayan Layi, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim for The Whispering Trees and Chinelo Okparanta for America.

Latest-Britain's Murray wins Wimbledon

  Andy Murrray ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's singles winner at Wimbledon after defeating Novak Djokovic in a pulsating contest.

Murray, who was beaten in last year's final by Roger Federer, triumphed 6-4 7-5 6-4 against six-time grand slam winner Djokovic.

The World No.2 won Olympic gold on Centre Court last year before going on to win the 2012 U.S. Open.

Murray, 26, is the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.

Plane Crash-Lands On San Francisco International Airport's Runway

A Boeing 777 aircraft that crash-landed at San Francisco airport killing two people did not have mechanical problems, an airline official has said.

The head of the South Korean airline Asiana, Yoon Young-doo, did not rule out human error but said the pilots were experienced veterans.
Most of the 307 people on board were injured, 49 of them seriously.
The plane came down short of the runway, ripping off its tail, after apparently hitting a sea wall.
One survivor said the plane came in to land too fast and too low, but there was no warning of problems.
Passengers and crew escaped down emergency slides as it burst into flames.

22-Year Old Ezinne Akudo Wins Miss Nigeria 2013

The finale of the Miss Nigeria 2013 beauty pageant was held last night at the Intercontinetal Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
After a selection process which involved both voters from all over the country and a panel of judges, 22-year old Ezinne Akudo emerged as the winner.
Akudo, who is a graduate of Law from the Abia State University, meanwhile, she also clinched the award for Miss Photogenic 
Miss Akudo takes home a 3 million naira cash prize, a brand new car (Corolla), accommodation for a year, a trip to California sponsored by MUD Cosmetics, and free trips to any part of the country by Aero Contractors.
